Mercedes-Benz x Alexa.
“The Moment Mercedes-Benz Switched Off the Lights.”
– A hack for the planet.
Sometimes you don’t need to invent something new.
You need to use what already exists – but see it differently.
On March 30, 2019, during global Earth Hour, the world was asked to switch off its lights.
We asked: how does a voice become a civic act?
And who’s really in control – people, brands, or the systems between them?
We worked inside MBUX – not by adding a sanctioned feature, but by targeting the voice assistant layer inside the car. Using Alexa – the separate smart-home voice system that millions already trust in their living rooms – we created a bridge between the car’s voice interface and the smart home.
We leveraged the voice channel as a connectivity vector – and gave it a different instruction.
At the moment the Mercedes spot nudged Alexa to “turn the lights off,” we turned that instruction into a global, collective act.
One hour. Millions of connected homes. One statement: Darkness as solidarity.
